Pain is one of the most common concerns addressed during examinations, and when discussing surgery or quality of life. Pets feel the same discomfort that we do when we are ill or injured.

Since your pets often can’t tell you when or where it hurts it is up to you and your veterinarian to recognize when you pet is uncomfortable. Here are some signs of discomfort to look for at home:

Cats

• Hiding or less interaction with the family
• Reluctance or hesitation before jumping
• Reduction in play activity
• Irritation and swatting when hind end petted
• Missing the litter box or loss of litter box training
• Constipation
• Reduced appetite

Dogs

• Difficulty climbing stairs, walking, running, or jumping
• Reluctance to play
• Lameness, limping, or moving with an altered walk
• Stiffness or slowness in rising from a resting position
• Soreness upon being touched
• Frequent yelping or whimpering or lack of vocalization
• Excessive licking of a joint or leg
• Behavioral changes such as withdrawal or aggression
